It's one of the most terrible ideas to drain your retirement accounts to pay bills that can be discharged in a bankruptcy. Retirement accounts are completely protected in bankruptcy. However, the decision of whether one should file bankruptcy or use the savings in your retirement accounts to pay creditors is a very personal one and the answer largely depends on how much the debts are and your ability to generate income in the near future to avoid bankruptcy long-term.
